How severe was British taxation on the colonies?

Taxes were very light. It was not the amount of taxes that was being protested, tt was the fact that Britain thought it could tax from afar, without any say by the colonists. They feared that allowing that to happen would lead eventually to heavy taxes they could not later protest, having allowed the right.
