How do I dye my hair at home?

Right now my hair is dyed black. But I want to dye it brown with blonde highlights. Not my whole but just the top half. Help please ? my mom would do it for me. She always dyes my hair but always one color. I tried dying it burgundy after I dyed it black but only my roots dyed D: But What do I need to dye my hair lighter ?
