DVD converting question Please help!?

ok i know when im burning a video that is divx or AVI that my dvd burning software will encode it to DVD format before burning it but if i convert all my videos to "mpg NTSC" will it finish burnig faster? o and if i convert my videos to "mpg NTSC" will they still be playable on my CPU? plz and thank you
