Can I paint a MDF constructed hutch?

Have inexpensive "embly required" hutch [like you might find at Walmart or Kmart] that I would like to paint. Would paint adhere to the surface of this type of furniture? The surface is like a contact paper only not removable. Not sure I am describing this well but hope someone will understand what I am talking about. Anyway, would like to paint it but am not sure what preparation it would take or even if its paintable. Help!
